11/8/2023 0 Comments Is quake ii rtx worth it![]() When we talk about Quake II, we’re talking old-school PC gaming, and old-school graphics. Memories: Going way, way back to Quake II So 4.Update: The final version seems to have changed the demo file name shown in the video, but we just tested it on the free version Nvidia released this morning ( download it here). And a tech demo based on 2 decades old game. They can "announce" 5000 and it matters dick if all we get is 3 games so far lol. There is no special magic there, other than that they stuffed dedicated hardware for ray tracing into GPU (which conforms to DirectX ray tracing feature set aka DXR). RTX is DXR, it's just neatly packaged under their name and can be used as an exclusive feature locked down to NVIDIA cards. When your enjoying DXR on AMD hardware next year don't forget to thank Nvidia for the push. Developers didn't care about it when they introduced DXR, but as soon as RTX was launched all of sudden you have 15 something titles working on it. In fact if it wasn't for the big push with RTX you can bet your arse we wouldn't have much in the way of RT on anything. Just because they charge an arm and leg (and maybe a little bit of spleen too) and the performance difference is not light years in front, doesn't make it a marketing ploy. TBF, we're 8 months in, have 3 real world titles (not including quake) which are measurable proof RTX performs better than current DXR on any other card. These are imo the best sweet spot settings for 1080ti as it is very playable and it looks good.ġ920x1080 -> Global Illumination LOW -> 70% Resolution Scale -> 53FPS ![]() I would still rather stick to the settings that kept me at around 40+ FPS though. The game will look a bit more blurry when downscaled but that is in my opinion a much better trade-off than having the Global Illumination OFF with higher resolution scale, as the game looks so much better.Įven at 24-30FPS, the frame times are very consistent and the game was perfectly playable. IMO, its not worth it using Global Illumination above LOW as it has huge impact on FPS and the difference is barely noticeable.įor 1080ti users, its worth it to keep the Global Illumination at LOW instead of OFF and to use lower Resolution Scale to get better FPS. Basicaly, with Global Illumination OFF, places with little light are very, very dark. The difference between Global Illumination OFF and LOW is quite substantial and it also translates into the huge FPS difference. But its not worth it as the noise is quite bad. Turning OFF the Denoiser adds about 2-4FPS on top of what I listed above regardless of resolution.
